Malaysia opens Putrajaya MRT Line (Phase 2)
16th March 2023, Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim flagged off the Phase 2 of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Putrajaya Line.
Putrajaya Line is the second line of the Klang Valley MRT Project which connects the Greater Kuala Lumpur region to the government administrative capital at Putrajaya.
The line consists of 57.7km in total length with 44.2km of elevated tracks and 13.5km underground tunnels.
It will have 36 operational stations of which 27 are elevated and 9 underground.
Putrajaya MRT is also connected to 10 interchange stations which is a component of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System connecting all public transport systems in Kuala Lumpur.
The line is expected to serve over 104,000 daily passengers thus reducing traffic congestion and making public transportation an attractive choice within Greater Kuala Lumpur.
Using standard gauge track with 750V DC third rail electrification is the standard for MRT and LRT lines in Malaysia.
The signaling system for the automated Putrajaya Line was delivered by Alstom for communications-d train control (CBTC) system and onboard signaling for 49 sets of 4-car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) by Hyundai Rotem with operating speed of 100kph.
With the launch of Putrajaya Line, MRT Corp is setting their aim to begin construction of MRT Line 3 this year.
Line 3 or MRT Circle Line is expected to form a loop line circling but not entering Kuala Lumpur's central business district, while linking up the radial rail lines.
Line 3 is targeted to start operation in 2028.
